Anyone has watched the show Tidying up with Marie Kondo? In every episode, Marie Kondo (an organizational consultant) will visit houses, helping residents with one task: Tidying up. You might be wondering why would I need a stranger to come into my house? On top of that, the stranger is going to teach me how to tidy up stuff in my house? Hell no! Plus, I don’t want to let people witness the “slum” condition of my house. But, as much as you think it is unnecessary, sometimes we just need that little push to start tidying up our house.
Here’s an interesting ritual Marie Kondo did before she began tidying up every house: She will spend a few minutes kneeling on the ground, head bowed, “greeting” the house. After that, she will walk through the tidying process with the family.
No matter the scale of disarray, her practice, coined as the KonMari method, always proves to be effective. It involves dividing items by categories and asking the question, “Does this item spark joy?”. If it sparks joy, keep it; otherwise, throw it away or donate to Good Sammy. KonMari method bases its practice around the issue of feeling underlying every decision making about things we treasure or trash. At the end of the day, it is the attachment to an item that dictates what stays in our arm length.
Hosting Guests with KonMari
It will always be like that. When you have guests over, you will put in the extra work to make the toilet seat sparkling clean. Or give your house some extra doses of air freshener. No judging here, we all had done it before! It is challenging to keep your house in a condition that is always ready for guests.
Regular Hosting Tips
So, what if I do regularly host guests?
Cleanliness, of course, is the primary requirement to a successful stay. (check out our articles on: Choosing Your Housekeeper) Organization will follow. You don’t want to have clusters of items sitting at every corner of your house because they annoy guests. You want to establish this cozy and airy in-house atmosphere where your guests can have a connection with the house they are staying in.
I believe we all can adopt some of the KonMari methods when managing a short-term rental property:
Be grateful to the house:
Spend time appreciating every little thing in your house. It is often through intentional meditation that we come to realize all the tiny little things in the house can impact our head space. With that, we should take the extra effort to set the tone of our house for our guests. IF YOU DON’T EVEN WANT TO LIVE THERE, WHY WOULD THEY STAY THERE?
Spark some joys:
We all want our belonging to spark joy. When we are hosting guests, we should also ask the same question, “Does it spark joy for the guests?” Although different items hold different meaning for different people, we should understand our guests are looking for items that spark joy during their stay too. Be it as small as the provision of tea and coffee, a foot massager, a small chair for shoes wearing etc (Check out our articles on: “Hi-Tech Airbnb“) Your guests will love to unwind after a long day of travel or work. Hence, you will be the best person to share how you unwind by making all these little things accessible to them.
